2024 is just around the corner (does that bring you relief or anxiety?) and as we step into another exciting year, the world of digital marketing continues to evolve. While it’s impossible to see the future (boy, do I wish I had a crystal ball!) we can look at what’s going on in digital marketing right now and make some strong guesses as to what is going to attract those good leads to your door in 2024.

From the rise of AI-driven marketing tools to the ever-growing importance of personalized content, we'll cover the key trends that will make waves in 2024. So, grab your favorite cup of coffee (or something stronger…), get comfortable, and let's dig in.

2024 Key Digital Marketing Trends

  1. Social Media Paid Advertising: Social media remains a central focus for small businesses. The effectiveness of social media ads, along with their analytic tools, makes them a cost-effective option for targeting specific users and demographics. But be smart about which channels you’re investing in. If your demographic is business owners, LinkedIn should be your main (and possibly only) social channel to target. Tiktok has been growing for the 35+ crowd, but it’s also a cesspool of misinformation. Think long and hard about your target customer and do some research on what social channels they use. You can even poll your personal contacts to find out where they are on social media the most.

  2. Direct Mail: Contrary to the digital trend, direct mail continues to be relevant. Its physical nature creates a memorable impression on customers. I mean, I love a well-designed postcard! (Especially if there’s a coupon…) Many small businesses are combining social media and direct mail strategies to broaden their reach.

  3. Search Engine Marketing and Optimization (SEM & SEO): SEM, particularly Google Ads, has transformed digital marketing for small businesses. SEO remains crucial, as appearing at the top of search results is vital due to most web traffic going to websites on the first page.

  4. Email and Content Marketing: These strategies offer a unique opportunity to connect with customers and build relationships. Email marketing is cost-effective and provides a direct line of communication that you permanently own (contrary to your social media accounts), while content marketing helps establish your small business as an industry authority.

  5. Traditional Media (and Not-So-Traditional): Despite the rise of digital media, traditional media like newspapers, TV ads, and local advertising still hold value, especially for businesses that deal directly with customers. One not-so-traditional media that you should consider — buying ads on streaming platforms such as Hulu and Peacock. And there’s a ton of other advertising opportunities that you probably notice in your day-to-day activities out in the world that you’ve never even considered, including gas station video ads, taxi video ads — any digital screen that you see out in the wild can be bought.

Social Media Marketing Trends for Small Businesses in 2024

  1. Video Content Dominance: Platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram Reels continue to lead, emphasizing the importance of engaging and high-quality video content.

  2. Influencer Marketing Evolution: A shift towards micro and nano-influencers with smaller, highly engaged niche audiences for more authentic and relatable content.

  3. Personalized Experiences through AI: Leveraging AI for personalized messaging, recommendations, and advertisements to enhance customer relationships.

  4. Augmented Reality (AR): Utilizing AR for interactive experiences, product showcases, and virtual try-ons, especially on platforms like Snapchat and Instagram.

  5. Social Commerce Expansion: Integrating e-commerce directly into social media platforms for seamless shopping experiences, including shoppable posts and simplified checkout processes.

  6. Social Messaging Apps as Marketing Channels: Apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, and WeChat evolving into marketing channels for personalized messages, customer support, and transactions.

  7. User-Generated Content Amplification: Amplifying UGC to build authenticity, trust, and community around the brand. UGC is huge and you’ve likely already seen this and didn’t know what it was. Content creators across the world are paid to make videos on products and services for a brand, giving the appearance that it’s a genuine review from a customer. Which sometimes it is. But most likely it’s someone who is good with a camera and showing off a product in return for payment. Nothing wrong with that. But now that you know it exists, you’re going to see them EVERYWHERE.

  8. Live Streaming and Interactive Experiences: Utilizing platforms like Facebook Live, Instagram Live, and YouTube Live for real-time engagement, product launches, and Q&A sessions.

  9. Using Social Media as Search Engines: Users want more social, interactive, and visual content in their online searches. The trend of using social media as search engines is a significant shift in how people seek and consume information online. Recognizing the threat posed by social media, traditional search engines like Google have started to incorporate more visual and social elements into their results. This change has implications for content strategy, as businesses and marketers need to adapt to these evolving preferences to effectively reach and engage their audience.

In 2024, it's recommended for small businesses to adopt a multi-channel approach, combining wide-scale social media strategies with other forms of marketing like direct mail, content marketing, and traditional media. Staying adaptable and open to emerging trends is key to reaching your audience online in the new year.

So what do you think? What tactics from above will you be using in your small business marketing? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
